As we say goodbye to April….why is it National Fair Housing Month?
National Fair Housing Month is celebrated in April in honor of the passing of the Fair Housing Act. On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, TN. In response to the tragedy of Dr. King’s death [and the resulting explosion of unrest, nationwide], President Lyndon Johnson marshaled his resources to speed up the Congressional approval of a national fair housing bill. On April 11, 1968, just seven days after the assassination of Dr. King, President Johnson signed into law Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, also known as the Fair Housing Act.
Thank you to the Tennessee Human Rights Commission for laying it out so clearly – and for its great work! More: https://www.tn.gov/humanrights/news/2024/4/5/honoring-national-fair-housing-month.html
